What is a Certified Financial Planner®?

A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® (CFP®) is a professional who has completed rigorous education and examination requirements, and adheres to high ethical standards. A CFP® is qualified to provide comprehensive financial planning services, including retirement planning, tax strategies, investment management, estate planning, and risk management.

Working with a CFP® ensures you receive expert guidance tailored to your specific financial situation. They take a holistic approach, considering all aspects of your financial life to help you create a strategy that works toward your short- and long-term goals.

What can I expect during an initial consultation with a CFP®?

During a consultation with a CFP®, you can expect a discussion focused on understanding your financial situation, goals, and needs. The advisor will typically ask about your income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and current investment strategies. They’ll listen to your goals—whether it’s saving for retirement, buying a home, or managing debt—and work to develop a personalized strategy based on your needs and risk tolerance.

In addition, a financial advisor will explain the various services they offer and how they can help you achieve your goals. They may also outline their fees and explain how they are compensated. The goal of the consultation is to ensure that both you and the advisor have a clear understanding of how to move forward and whether you’re a good fit to work together.

What’s the Difference Between Financial Planning and Investment Planning?

Financial planning is the comprehensive process of creating a roadmap for your financial future. It involves setting long-term goals, managing your cash flow, planning for retirement, handling debt, insurance, taxes, and estate planning, and ensuring that all aspects of your financial life work together to achieve your desired lifestyle.

Investment planning, on the other hand, is a more focused subset of financial planning. It specifically looks at how to manage and grow your assets through investments like stocks, bonds, and real estate. An investment plan helps determine your risk tolerance, asset allocation, and the types of investment vehicles that align with your financial goals.

While investment planning is an important part of a financial plan, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Financial planning takes a holistic approach, ensuring that all aspects of your financial life are aligned and working towards your broader goals.
